This question asks students to describe a potential benefit and a potential hazard of treating a disease if the development cycle for approving new drug treatments is accelerated. Students need to consider the ethical guidelines with which scientists operate in the development of new drugs to fight diseases, then identify one positive and one negative possible outcome for the scenario described.  This is a short answer test item used in a past Ohio Graduation Test assessment (for more information, see IMS: Assessments). From this test item, a visitor may view the passages and stimuli, and information regarding general student performance on this item. The Ohio Department of Education’s IMS website allows visitors to search for test items and build a printable database of questions by choosing the "Add to Your Backpack" function.
