Technology Use
Technology has the potential to transform teaching and learning. When used effectively, technology converts traditional
classrooms into sites where exploration and discovery are a daily occurrence. Picture the classroom of the
21st century: students are highly engaged with the material, they are challenged to apply what they have
learned in the classroom to real-world problems, and they have the capacity to express what they know and are able to do
in fresh and innovative ways.
Electronic technologies are changing our personal and professional lives in important ways. Giving students
opportunities to interact with technology in meaningful ways is essential as they build skills for the workplace and
develop confidence in their ability to function in a highly technological society.
The Technology Use section includes materials that touch on several important aspects of technology integration. The
activities help preservice and practicing teachers begin to look at the integration of technology critically and to
differentiate between the incidental use of technology and truly effective integration of technology. Several examples
of highly innovative classroom use of technology are included. Also included is information for building basic technology
literacy, assistive technologies, a look at ethical issues associated with technology use, and samples of online tools
for teachers.
