Electronic Tools for Assessment

There are a variety of online tools freely available for classroom use. The purposes of these applications range from rubric makers to test construction tools. The samples provided here could be adapted to a variety of educational settings. Consider modeling the effective use of these applications as part of your preservice teacher education program or professional development programs for practicing teachers.

Seeing Reason
This online concept mapping tool effectively uses technology to assess a student's developmental understanding of concepts. Seeing Reason can be used for demonstrating cause-and-effect relationships, helping students analyze complex systems, communicating understanding visually, and promoting collaborative work.

Blogger
This online communication tool can be used to facilitate discussion of topics and provide students with a forum for publishing their ideas. Weblogs (blogs) can be used as a form of online journal or portfolio. The weblog can be used as a formative or summative assessment tool.

Rubistar
RubiStar is an online rubric development tool. This tool can also be used to analyze the performance of an entire class after student work has been scored using the rubric created with the tool.

QuizStar
QuizStar allows users to create quizzes by writing multiple-choice, true-false, and short-answer questions; attach media files to your questions and answer choices; and manage student data.QuizStar has applications for assessment throughout the instructional process.
